On behalf of the Elder Abuse Prevention Unit (EAPU) and the Prevention of Elder Abuse in CALD Communities (PEACC) Taskforce I would like to thank you and June Hordern for contributing to the success of our forum on 12th July 2005.

It was a very innovative idea to include comedy in a forum, which addressed serious social issues and had to be evaluated for measured outcomes. The comedy interlude contributed to tension relief, to recharging of energy and to awareness raising of issues relevant to the forum’s topic through laughter.The comedy content and delivery styles were appropriate, respectful and tailored to the type of the event, to the participating audience and to the general topic.

Comments given by the forum participants regarding the comedy segment included.

Chris Daniel arrived in Australia with his new wife Kerrin in December 2003. An unapologetic Pom: he concentrated on the rigours of a new land hell bent on teasing him about his fellow countrymen’s poor turn out at sporting events. However, armed with the newly crowned English Rugby World Cup Championship and a place to hide out from the famous biting sarcasm of the Aussies, he settled in Brisbane and tried to keep his head down.

In August 2004 a public billboard in Brisbane’s West End called to him. It advertised the comedy tutelage of one Robert Grayson. Chris had wanted to try comedy for a number of years but always ‘chickened’ out when it came to getting on the stage. There were a number of excuses: ‘It looks too hard!’, ‘That comic guy was shit, how the hell does he stand the silence!’ to just good old fashioned fear!

He scrubs up well.
Chris took the course. He was in a new country. No sod knew him and he could crawl back into his hidey hole if he stunk up the joint. Seven weeks later and he finished Robert’s course. He'd written new material, he’d practiced, he’d pooed his pants every time he thought about the impending show… Was he ready to go on stage? No!

Chris entered the stage to a sympathetic crowd who knew all the comedians were first timers and gained laughs that he wouldn’t have received in a real venue. He knew he sucked but didn’t realised quite how much until Robert posted the DVD of the recorded show… It was a turning point: poor microphone technique, forgotten lines and monotone so mono that Steven Wright would have said. ‘Shit, that guy needs to lighten up!’
My first Audience...
It was a shock to the system. Chris had booked his first proper public open mic performance with the Sit Down comedy club for January 2005 and he had three weeks to get his act together. He had some raw bones (real raw bones, gnawed to the quick by the neighbourhood hounds) and passible material: all well and good but the thought of performing for that crowd - a crowd with no emotional or financial investment - stirred the acid in his stomach…

Oh... Mi... Gard!!!

The show went fantastically well. So well that Chris thought he was the best, he was born for this. The laughter that came his way lifted him to the skies. He was congratulated by all and his head swelled to the size of the Hindenburg...

Enjoy this whilst it lasts... I got better things to do... Know what I'm saying?

The next show at the same venue brought him his first death on stage and plummeting back to earth... just like the Hindenberg: 100plus gigs later and Chris still considers that terrible show to be the best he ever had – Only comedians and other showmen will know why.

The motto he lives by now is simply this:

Swallow the fear and get on with it

(Disclaimer: Motto doesn't apply to rollacoasters and wrestling with crocs)!
